Week 28

Weekly Greetings!

This week with my parent letter, I will be sending home an assigned time for your conference on next Monday, March 4th. There will be an early release that day, and we will start conferences at 2:15pm. I look forward to discussing your child's progress with you at that time.

Last week, every spare minute we could afford went into the Science Fair projects all the students are entering in the Science Fair this week on Tuesday afternoon. It will be in Tok School library starting at 12:30pm that day if you would like to attend. The students did group projects, and there has been a lot of typing and organizing to do as you can see from the pictures.
Another important even this week will be the start of an elementary reading incentive program called "Read Around the World." Through this activity, students will be learning about the seven continents of the world. Any independent reading time will be counted, so be looking for a new reading log after the "Kick Off" on Wednesday.  The goal will be to read 21, 000 minutes, and class progress will be tracked on a centrally located map. The students must read 3,000 minutes as a class to get to each continent. There will an individual prize for the top reader in each class. Also, there will be a midway prize for each class and grand prize for the class that gets around the world first. Please support your child by encouraging them to read at home and return their reading logs.

Have a fantastic week!

Kind Regards,

Julie Brown

Week 27

Weekly Greetings!

It seems strange to start a week on a Wednesday, but that is where school begins this wek. Due to the three-day week, there will not be a Spelling test this Friday. I am sending home the words for next week, though it is a review unit so the students will be familiar with all the words. For the students returning their Book Logs weekly, I will be having and after school party on next Monday, February 25. If your child is one of the students that has read at home nightly, they will be bringing home a permission slip this week. This will be the last "Seasonal Readers" party, as the elementary teachers will be introducing a K-5 reading incentive program on February 27. I will explain more on that next week.

As for last week, the highlight was Valentine's Day of course. We started our celebration by graphing Conversation Heart candy and found that there were more pink candies than any other color. Each student had a box to sort and graph before eating them. Then it was time to hand out cards and eat treats. Thank you to all that provided something for the party.
On Friday, the class learned a little history about Presidents' Day, and in honor of our first president George Washington, we made Cherry Thumbprint cookies.  The students enjoyed the additional snack after recess.
I hope you have an awesome week!

Kind Regards,

Julie Brown

Week 26

 Weekly Greetings!

Last week was packed full of surprises and activities. We started the week of with a visit from Mr. Kelso, who wanted to thank the students for their encouraging pictures. He had finished his first round of Chemo and plans to return next year.
Shortly after Mr. Kelso left, the Battle of the Books started. We had four students that read most of the books, and wanted to compete. They all said it was fun to participate, and hope to try for a higher ranking next year.
The district Science Fair will be held at the end of February, so the students worked in their groups to do the experiments they picked. This week, the hard part of trying to put it all together for a board project will begin.
In the Geography pod class, we finished up the continent of Asia with a dragon project. They are considered good luck in China. I am not sure how well the dragons made it home on Friday, but the students sure had fun making them.
This week we will have a Valentine's Day party on Thursday from 2pm to 3pm. I am sending home a list of students, and also asking for snacks with the Parent Letter on Monday. Please be watching for it. Also note that next Monday and Tuesday will be in-service days, so there will not be any school.

Have a wonderful week!

Kind Regards,

Julie Brown

Week 25

Weekly Greetings!

Despite a large part of our week going to MAP testing, we were able to participate in a few other activities.  Wednesday was our 100th Day celebration, and after recess we had 100 minutes of fun events that were connected to math concepts. The students were crowned for the event, and after a themed story the students hunted for 100 Hersey Kisses that were hidden in the room. We estimated their weight biased on a bag of Peanut M&Ms. While eating snacks, we graphed some choices of things we would like to have 100 of, and then it was out to the hall to build a train of 100 objects. The finale was a challenge between two groups to build a tower using 100 toilet paper rolls, which they had to defend  while having a paper wad war. I think everyone enjoyed the 100 minutes of fun.
Thursday was the Spelling Bee and we watched three students from our class as they participated in the competition.
On Friday, the kindergarten chased out the bad and welcomed in the good for the start of the Chinese New Year. They marched through the school, going into each room and entertained us with rattles.
We will have another full week, and the school counselor will be visiting on Wednesday. We will also be starting Science Fair experiments for projects the students picked last week.

Have a great week, and kind regards.

Julie Brown
